positive safety culture can not be developed or achieved by a particular department in an organization but as a collective effort of the entire team. it has been within a closed observation that most organizations and business decisions are all based on economic issues. but this can also be applied when considering the health and safety function within an organization.

every poorly managed safety practice in any business can result in a serious financial and material loss. but taking into consideration good health and safety practices will prevent all sorts of damage to the organization. however, there is a huge need to empower the below structure in other to improve the health and safety behavior of employees for a better safety culture.

  1. Commitment by the management.
  2. Promotion of health and safety standards.
  3. competent personnel with relevant skills, knowledge, ability, training, and experience.
  4. They should be effective communication within the organization.
  5. The organization should keep up to date with the legal requirement.
  6. The should be good cooperation from top management and within the workforce.
  7. 0They should be a good developmental training program.

1) Commitment by the management.

A structured organization with a good leadership style show care to their workforce. Dedication to safety policy is always an effective way to establish a perfect health and safety culture. being visible to the workforce and showing support to safety-related issues also go along way to build trust and strengthen the confidence of the employees. the commitment from top management also goes along to motivate the reduce blame culture as leaders take all responsibility. management must ensure they carry departmental meetings in various departments always. to discussed safety-related problems.

2) promoting health and safety standard.

achieving a positive health and safety culture that satisfied the need of everyone around the organization, it, therefore, means everybody must understand the health and safety standard within that organization and function of individuals by attaining and keep that standard.beside these procedures needed to control and reduced the threat of health and safety. this standard need to plainly determine the action needed by individuals to improve health and safety behavior at work. once a good standard is established, it is important that it should be actively communicated and promoted by everyone especially the top management. eg

a)management must behave safely themselves.

b)making sure employees are taking part in specialty refresher training.

3) competence

the competency of a worker here has to do with the quality that workers need to adequately achieve their tasks required of them. so for your organization to achieve a better safety culture and eventually improve upon the behavior of workers at work, competency must be taken seriously. perhaps taking into consideration the following aspect. eg

a) the worker's knowledge about the task.

b)evidence of qualification

c) membership of any professional body.

d) undertaking practical assessment etc… once all is taken into consideration the worker can be allow to carry out his or her task without any fear.

4) effective communication must be taken seriously within the organization

if there is one problem organizations are facing today is effective communication between peers. and this is not just an issue between employees also at the level of management. this has equally been recognized as a global problem because people come from different backgrounds in life. with different languages. and not all workers are educated well, some deaf and blind as well. so most often it's difficult for the management to communicate a message directly. some barriers that hinder communication in most organizations are_

noise from machines, poor hearing or eyesight, language problems.

however, communication can be defined as the process of delivering information from a sender to the recipient. so to truly have effective communication, the information must be transmitted and received clearly. below the communication methods to improve health and safety at work.

a) written communication.

b)verbal communication.

C)visual graphic communication.

5)keeping up to date with the l requirement.

the legislation states the minimum that must be achieved by employers and employees alike, so the organization must set in place that required identifying legal requirements and keeping up-to-date with legal require .legal requirement and enforcement are very significant and turn to influence the safety culture of the organization.

6) Training and Training.

health and safety training very important in the development of better safety culture and also influences workers' behavior. however, the training of workers also part of the requirement. whenever work an individual is about to undertake must require training to fully understand the hazard involved in that particular task. training will be required to offer to all levels of personnel and employees at a different level of work. especially when joining the organization, change of working style or change of working environment, when a new machine is introduced. common training types like induction training and toolbox talk always good for keep workers informed.

An employer is responsible to keep your worker safe. And one of the most effective ways is by improving their behavior towards health and safety.
